Conference Host City

Beijing, also known as Peking, is the capital of the People's Republic of China. Located in the north of China, it is the nation's political, economic, cultural, educational and international trade and communication center.

Beijing is well known not only for its position as the capital and the political center of China, also for its culture treasures coming from the long history. At the heart of the city lies the Forbidden City which was the home of the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. And the Palace Museum (http://en.dpm.org.cn/) contains imperial collections of Chinese art.

Former imperial parks, such as Beihai and Jingshan, are excellent choices for a walk and rest in the city center. Beihai Park is one of the oldest, largest, and best-preserved of all the ancient imperial gardens in China. Jingshan Park is regarded as the best place in downtown Beijing to have a panoramic view of the city and the Forbidden City.

Temple of Heaven (Tiantan), where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties made visits for annual ceremonies of prayers to Heaven for good harvest, is one of the best known religious sites in Beijing, and also one of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Beijing. The others are Ming Tombs, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Grand Canal, and the ‘Peking Man’ site at Zhoukoudian.

Besides the above tourist attractions, there are many to see and to experience in Beijing. Hutongs and Siheyuans, which constituted the city’s living community in old times, are rapidly disappearing and being replaced by high-rise buildings. Mansion of Prince Gong is the most well preserved mansion, and the Southern Gong and Drum Lane is one of the oldest streets in Beijing. Now it is famous in tourists for its shops, restaurants, and bars.

Do not miss Peking opera (Jingju) if you are an opera lover. It is a traditional theatre form of China, combining music, vocal performance, mime, dance, and acrobatics. After the show, Beijing cuisine, especially the Peking Duck, is the best choice for dinner. The meat is prized for its thin, crisp skin, and usually served with Chinese style pancakes.
